It’s not a glamorous topic, but these things need to be addressed. A blocked drain can be costly, time consuming and inconvenient. If you notice any unpleasant smells or the plugs are draining slower than usual, there could be a blocked drain in your student property.
So how can you prevent blocked drains and why should you bother?
Blocked drains are caused by a buildup of fat and grease or objects such as sanitary products and baby wipes.
The 3 P’s
Please make sure that everyone in your student home only flushes down the 3 P’s – pee, poo and paper.
Even if an item says it’s flushable, such as toilet wipes, it is still safer to pop them in the bin to avoid any blockages.
Cooking fat
Cooking fat poured down the kitchen sink will solidify and cause fatbergs in the pipes and drains. The best way to prevent this is to wipe out any pans with some kitchen towel and put that in the bin before washing up.
Why bother?
Even if it’s not your financial responsibility, a blocked drain and unusable toilet could potentially mean days without facilities. All the disruption that comes with it will certainly have an affect on you.
