The secret to being organised

Getting organised at University can be tricky.  You’re trying to navigate a new town, new university accommodation, new friendships and new workloads.  It might even be the first time you’ve ever been solely responsible for your own time.  No wonder it can be stressful getting yourself to a place where it’s all under control!  The good news is there is no secret to being organised.

Top Tips to Getting Organised

We’ve put together some top tips that should help you get organised and stay sane.  As well as saving a whole load of stress and worry.

Write a list – To Do lists are FANTASTIC!  Having it all written down can really help focus your mind and then tasks can be prioritised. It will stop you having to remember everything and creates a list of jobs that can be ticked off as you work through them. Don’t become overwhelmed, break down large tasks into small steps and tackle them one by one.  Remember you can’t eat an elephant in one bite!

Get motivated – Start with something that is easily achievable.  Making your bed in the morning is a great way to get off on the right foot and help you feel in control.  Get energised and motivated for the day ahead. It’s always easier to crack on with tasks when you’ve already achieved something as it puts you in a positive mind-set.

Get into a routine – Create a study schedule to get yourself in a routine which will also leave time for sports/societies/socialising.  It’s important to have a balanced life – all work and no play …. You know how it goes!

Be realistic about how long things will take, make sure you have enough time to properly complete your work, including proof-reading.  Running out of time will just cause even more stress and have a knock-on effect for everything else that needs to be done.

Planners – It’s important to keep a diary of all deadlines and other commitments so you can keep on track.  Knowing what needs to be done and when will help keep you focused.  There are even some great online tools that you can download for free such as this planner.  Use post-it’s, highlighters, folders, coloured notebooks … whatever floats your boat and keeps you on track.

Look after yourself – We can’t stress enough how important this is.  Make sure you get enough sleep, exercise and fresh air.  Stay positive and don’t let negative thoughts creep in – you are trying your best.  If things get on top of you then take a break and start with a fresh mind.  To save time, think about batch cooking so there is always a healthy meal to hand.

Most importantly in this day and age of technical wizardry … remember to Back Everything Up!  There are plenty of online storage systems such as Dropbox and Google Drive.
