Starting University in your first year can feel like a daunting experience. Even if you’re returning for your second or third year, the disruption from the pandemic is still all too real. Read on for our advice on how to make the transition from online learning and lockdown hopefully a little bit smoother and less overwhelming.
Over the last 18 months, you will have built up more resilience than you probably know, so channel your inner strength – the difficult experiences can be positives as they help shape you into the person you are today. Enjoy the fun times and make the most of new experiences. This is a fresh start, so try new things, and perhaps join a society or sports club to meet like-minded people.
Socials and sports clubs in conjunction with the Student’s Union will be running face to face in order to help you settle in and enjoy the time at University. Connect with friends and classmates online as early as possible to build your support network and recognise some friendly faces.
Be prepared – create a plan for study time and coursework. If you’re at the University of Gloucestershire, download the MyGlos student app to find out everything about the University of Gloucester campus, your timetable and keep up to date with news and events. There’s even a parent support app from Hartpury that can keep your guardian’s mind at rest. There is lots of support here so this one is an easy win.
The plan for returning in 2021 includes face to face teaching, but plans remain flexible and are driven by guidance from the Government. The University of Gloucester and Hartpury College have excellent technology and online tools available to all students. Up to 94% of teaching will be face to face in the first semester with online learning activities scheduled when learning can be improved that way.
If you are struggling financially as a result of the pandemic then you may be able to get assistance through the Financial Assistance Fund, more details can be found on the MyGlos app. Make sure you are claiming everything that you are entitled to. If you’re at University of Gloucestershire more details can be found here, while if you’re at Hartpury College you can find out more here.
Remember everyone is in the same boat and everyone probably feels lonely at some time. Emotions may be running particularly high as we once again try to adjust to a ‘new normal’ so be easy on yourself, take time out when you need and find someone you can talk to.
There is support available from a range of mental health services including Together All, or good old fashion email if you’re with the Uni of Glos, or check the wealth of student wellbeing info available at Hartpury.
