There’s no doubt about it, the pandemic has had a massive impact on students and their studies. Many of you may have come to your University accommodation without experiencing traditional A Level exams. This could leave you without experience of how to prepare for exams, and make the whole experience of exams at University more daunting.
But try not to worry, we have put together a helpful guide on how to prepare for exams to maximise success and minimise stress!
Preparation is Key
Check your timetable beforehand so you know where you should be and when. This will also help prioritise subjects to revise. Make sure to check back regularly in case any changes are made.
Plan your time effectively with a revision schedule to keep you on track – use a calendar, online schedule or sticky notes. Whatever makes it easier for you.
Be honest about which topics you find more challenging and allocate extra time for them.
Make sure you have everything on hand before you start. A calm and uncluttered study space is a must. All our student accommodation has double study rooms with space for a desk.
Ensure your laptop is fully charged with autosave turned on and get any stationery, books or study aids you might need. Grab some snacks and drinks and you are good to go.
Revision takes many different formats, so find the one that works for you. It could be revision cards and notes, past papers, recording your notes and even group sessions for support. There’s no right or wrong way, the end goal is the same!
Don’t rely on memory alone, make sure you really understand the theory behind the subject matter. Plenty of extra reading will help with this.
Be Good to Yourself
It can’t be stressed enough that shorter, more frequent study sessions are the way to avoid fatigue and burn out. Take regular 10 minute breaks, get some fresh air and breathe.
Healthy eating, plenty of water, exercise and good sleep are all essential in the build up to the exam season to help you perform at your best.
Include some time in your study schedule to relax and do activities that you enjoy. Switching off with a walk, some TV (Squid Game anyone?) or a good book can help more than ploughing on through when your brain has reached capacity.
Last minute prep will never go to waste, but concentrate on your existing knowledge and reinforcing the key points. Don’t try to learn new information as it will be overwhelming.
The Day of the Exam
Sleep, eat and drink well to make sure you have enough energy to concentrate and get through the day.
Remember to keep perspective, this is only a small part of the entire course. What might feel like the end of the world in the moment can always be worked through. Don’t compare yourself to others and their thoughts on the paper.
After the exam, remember to take some time out. You will probably have more exams to get through, but take a few hours to relax before you start prepping for the next one.
