How to cope with exam stress

May 25, 2022 | Uncategorized

As the exam season is upon us, it’s easy to feel stressed about the upcoming assessments.  However, there are some things that can help alleviate these feelings and help keep you in a positive frame of mind to cope and perform at your best.  We’ve put together some pointers on how to cope with exam stress.

Hopefully you have already seen our blog on preparing for exams so are feeling able to tackle the exams head on.

A little bit of stress isn’t all bad, use that adrenaline and motivation to push yourself through the day.

But remember to go easy on yourself.

Pulling an all-nighter might seem like a good idea if you haven’t done enough revision, but it really is counter-productive!  It will only serve to make you more tired and anxious.  Make sure you get a good amount of sleep the night before.  Eat a healthy breakfast and take a walk in the fresh air to clear your mind.  And don’t forget to stay hydrated.  It’s really important to take care of yourself on the day so you are in the optimum state to cope with the exams and not get too stressed.

Be prepared.

Get everything you need for the day ready the night before – water bottle, snacks,  watch, stationary, notes, books ….. And don’t forget to double check the exam schedule so you know exactly where you need to be and when.

Take a step back and keep things in perspective – the exam you are facing is only one part of your overall course.  If it all becomes a bit overwhelming then try and breathe, mindfulness is great for this kind of situation so download some apps like Calm or Headspace.  There is life after University and exams no matter what the results.  Don’t beat yourself up or overthink the answers

Stay away from the drama llama’s!  Try to keep drama at arms length, there is no need to allow other people’s stressful energy to put you off your stride.  Chat to friends and family for support, they are the ones that really know you.  Reach out if you need anything and don’t be afraid to ask for help.
